China to limit number of online games over myopia fears

SHANGHAI (AFP) –  Shares of Chinese video game companies plunged on Friday after the government unveiled plans to control the number of online games as part of an effort to prevent myopia among children. The plan is the latest move to tighten government oversight over the country’s fast-growing and highly popular video game industry — and a new blow to their stock market fortunes. The new regulations were announced late Thursday after Chinese President Xi Jinping issued an “important directive” to protect children’s eyesight. The education ministry said in a statement Thursday that the authorities will regulate and control the total ... Read more

Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag is not happy with Generation Zero

When Generation Zero released its gameplay trailer earlier this month, I remarked that its blend of moody landscapes and retro-futurist technology looked very similar to the work of Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, the creator of pen and paper RPG Tales from the Loop. As it turns out, those similarities have not gone unnoticed by Stålenhag himself, and the artist is not particularly happy with how those similarities have caused a flood of questions regarding whether he was involved with the project. The issue has been rumbling on for several weeks, starting not long after Avalanche released its gameplay trailer for ... Read more

Are Video Games Olympic Material? Some Boosters Say Yes

Mr. Assarasakorn of the Thai e-sports federation said a common problem is that casual video gamers are confused with “e-athletes,” some of whom have training regimens that include running and muscle-strengthening exercises. He added that physical training was linked with success in e-sports, and that playing video games had a physical dimension. “Even typing what I’m saying now, you’re engaging your core muscles,” he told this reporter. But the prevalence of violence in e-sports competitions may be a steeper obstacle to overcome. Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, said in April that “killer games” or ones that ... Read more

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition is out now as a free update

Update: Looks like the update went out a bit early! (At least if you’re in a timezone where it’s still Thursday.) The patch is now available for owners of Divinity: Original Sin 2 on Steam. Original story: Our 2017 Game of the Year wasn’t our favorite game of 2017 because it was technically flawless. Divinity: Original Sin 2 launched with a few bugs, and there are weak spots within its mountains of dialogue. I still loved it, though, and it’d be hard for Larian to somehow make it worse, so I’m damn excited for Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition, ... Read more

Gwent’s single-player campaign is now a stand-alone RPG

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game’s single-player campaign, Thronebreaker, is a role-playing game some 30 hours long and will be split off into a stand-alone title, CD Projekt Red said yesterday. As reported by Eurogamer, the developer made the announcement in a call with investors. The game is now called Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, and it will launch alongside Gwent sometime this year. In April, CD Projekt Red announced a six-month delay to Gwent’s launch as the developer overhauled the game, admitting that “we [had] started slowly drifting away from our original vision,” for the card collecting game. Back in November, ... Read more

Sea of Thieves’ latest update inadvertently gives players spyglass dongs

Sea of Thieves’ latest update has arrived, waving a fond farewell to the recent Cursed Sails event, and ushering in a new limited-time Bilge Rat Adventure, this one focussed around combat using the newly introduced cursed cannonballs. It also includes a heap of other additions, and changes – oh, and has inadvertently given players glorious spyglass dongs. Getting the dong thing out the way first then, eager pirates returning to the Sea of Thieves earlier today, following the game’s weekly maintenance downtime, were somewhat startled to discover that using the spyglass in certain instances could suddenly get a little lewd: ... Is Riot spending less on professional League of Legends?

Riot has struggled to secure a venue for the finals of Worlds this year. It’s also condensed the competition’s group stages into eight days, rather than the usual two weeks. A few months back, Riot held some of the group stages for MSI, a mid-season tournament between some of the world’s best teams, inside the EU LCS Studio in Berlin, rather than a prestigious independent venue. Many, including longtime League interviewer Travis Gafford, felt the studio was too small, and lacked the spectacle that the competition deserved. “It doesn’t feel like an international event,” he said during a travel vlog. ...
