Nvidia, Sony, and Others Promise a New Era of Cloud Gaming. Here’s What Their Services Are Like

For years, video game makers have tried to develop ways to stream their shooters and adventure games so that players wouldn’t need powerful computers or the latest console to see realistic looking blood splatter on their screens. Players could avoid spending big money on new, expensive equipment while game makers would be able to reach more people. The problem, however, is that the technology for streaming high-end video games has fallen short. Latency, those infuriating delays people sometimes experience when watching Hulu, for example, is a constant problem that could get a player’s character killed in a game like Doom. ... Read more

Jurassic World Evolution to add challenge mode, sandbox options in next update

Frontier’s Jurassic World Evolution is “initially stunning” but is “lacking the depth and variety to support mammoth playtimes”, reckons our Pip. Its next update, due September 13, aims to broaden its scope with a new challenge mode, more sandbox options, new contract types, and adjusted dino sizes among other things.  As outlined in a developer livestream (archived above), Challenge Mode starts players with limited cash on Isla Nublar, and lets them choose between four difficulty settings—easy, medium, hard and Jurassic.  “We’re also adding some new mechanics like Hammond Foundation fees, contract cancellation penalties, and personal best completion times,” explains Frontier. ... The Binding of Isaac: Repentance Got Announced, And We Have No Clue What It Is

Nicalis just announced The Binding of Isaac: Repentance, and while we got a trailer, we still have no clue what this actually is right now. The 19 second trailer gives us a logo for what we assume is a game, but not much else. We do know, however, that it will be at booth 233 at PAX West. Its presence at PAX suggests that is in fact a video game, but we can’t say that for certain. So, without any other information, I welcome your wild and wacky guesses about what this is.

What is cyberpunk?

A woman doing her makeup as the camera slowly pulls out to reveal she’s missing the bottom half of her face, a gaping cybernetic maw in its place. A cable jacked directly into a businessman’s skull, sparking and smoking as it fries his brain. An elevator the size of an apartment, crawling up the side of a high-rise towards the sky. These are just some of the fragmented vignettes studio CD Projekt Red put on display in Cyberpunk 2077’s debut trailer earlier this year. As an introduction to Night City, it promised one of the most distinctive game settings since ... Read more

Are Violent E-Sports Olympic Material? Some Boosters Say Yes

Mr. Assarasakorn of the Thai e-sports federation said a common problem is that casual video gamers are confused with “e-athletes,” some of whom have training regimens that include running and muscle-strengthening exercises. He added that physical training was linked with success in e-sports, and that playing video games had a physical dimension. “Even typing what I’m saying now, you’re engaging your core muscles,” he told this reporter. But the prevalence of violence in e-sports competitions may be a steeper obstacle to overcome. Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, said in April that “killer games” or ones that ... Read more
