Skipping Steam in 2018: Why Jason Rohrer independently distributes One Hour, One Life

Conventional wisdom may dictate that indie game devs should put all their PC games on Steam, but Jason Rohrer’s never been one to simply follow the crowd. The veteran indie is known for doing things differently, whether he’s making a game about burglary and home defense in which the perpetrators are often simultaneously the victims (The Castle Doctrine), exploring life and morality in a five-minute journey through a side-scrolling 2D maze (Passage), or burying a game in the desert in the hopes that a distant future generation might discover and play it (A Game for Someone). And now he’s selling ... Read more

Desktop GPU sales normalize as crypto-mining gold rush ends, report says

A new report by Jon Peddie Research (PDR) indicates that the PC market has “shaken off the gold rush fever of crypto-mining,” pushing GPU shipments back to normal levels. Going forward, JPR doesn’t anticipate cryptocurrency mining having any further impact on the sales of graphics cards, and the GPU market at large. “We can mark Q1’18 as the peak and last hurrah of the crypto-mining fever. Desktop GPUs, which went into mining rigs, have dropped back to their normal volume,” JPR said. “We believe the market for AIBs [add-in boards] for crypto-mining has ended and this will likely be our ... Battle for Azeroth’s new Azerite Armor is bad, but Blizzard has a way to fix it

It’s been almost two weeks since Blizzard released World of Warcraft’s newest expansion, Battle for Azeroth. And while the reception has been mostly positive, there’s one thing that players are almost universally unhappy with: Azerite Armor. Shortly after the expansion launched, criticisms of Azerite Armor started to emerge. The first complaint was that the armor, which is only available in the head, shoulder and chest gear slots, required players to grind a resource called Azerite Power, or AP, to unlock its traits — upgrades that alter abilities in helpful ways. Blizzard quickly patched this out to make it slightly easier ... Read more

EA probably saved Battlefield V by delaying it

Electronic Arts and DICE today announced they would be delaying the release of their biggest game of the year, Battlefield V. Those of us spoiled gamers who might have lost it in the crowded fall season will now have the game near the Thanksgiving holiday. Oskar Gabrielson, general manager at DICE, announced the main reason they’re pushing the game back is because, following feedback from alpha players and Gamescom attendees, they intend to make “meaningful improvements to the core gameplay experience.” The beta is still set to go live next week, but the game‘s actual release has been moved to November 20. ... Google’s $50 Titan security keys are now available in the US

Google began requiring its 85,000 employees to use Titan Keys last year and once it did, the company said it didn’t have a single instance where an account was taken over through a phishing attack. While two-factor authentication is recommended for strong security protections, not all methods are equal. Physical security keys like Titan or Yubikey are considered safer than methods requiring SMS messages, for example, since those could be intercepted by hackers. Titan Security Keys are available to US customers now through the Google Store. The company says they’ll be available in additional regions soon.
