China’s Tencent Folds Yet Another Video Game Company Into Its Empire

China’s Tencent, which already has ownership stakes and alliances with many major video game companies, has added another big name to the list. Square Enix, makers of Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider, have signed a letter of intent to enter into a “strategic alliance” with Tencent Holdings Ltd. While the details of the partnership weren’t listed, one result will be a joint venture company that will create AAA games based on new intellectual properties and licensing existing ones. “The alliance will enable us to couple our broad range of internet service capabilities to Square Enix Group’s superb creativity, and provide ... Sega Asks If You Want More Yakuza After Yakuza Kiwami 2

Hot on the heels of the launch of Yakuza Kiwami 2–the full remake of the series’ second entry–Sega put out a survey asking if people are interested in more. Specifically, it asks four separate questions that seemingly point to different projects that you may be aware of (see below). First, “how interested are you in remasters/remakes of existing Yakuza games?” is likely to be in relation to the remasters of Yakuza 3, 4, and 5 that are currently only slated for release in Japan. There aren’t any known plans to re-localize those games, but this may hint at them coming ... Read more

Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition is out Friday as a free update

Our 2017 Game of the Year wasn’t our favorite game of 2017 because it was technically flawless. Divinity: Original Sin 2 launched with a few bugs, and there are weak spots within its mountains of dialogue. I still loved it, though, and it’d be hard for Larian to somehow make it worse, so I’m damn excited for Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition, which launches this Friday, August 31 as a free update on PC. The 8.2 GB Definitive Edition update promises “approximately 150,000 new and rewritten words,” according to Larian, with a lot of focus on the third act. ... Read more

Why is VR Failing to Take Off (Again)? – 2018 | Tech.Co

Earlier this month, Sony proudly announced that it had managed to shift 3 million PlayStation VR headsets since launching the kit in October 2016. Yet this figure masks an underwhelming sales for the latest generation of virtual reality sets, which have failed to gel with consumers on a significant scale. Three million units is a large number, sure. But let’s put that in context – Sony has managed to sell over 80 million PS4s since its launch in November 2013, with 30 million of those coming since the introduction of the PSVR headsets. So why the disparity between overall Playstation ... Read more

In the wake of the Jacksonville shooting, Electronic Arts is donating $1 million to those impacted by the event. The company will also set up a fund to allow others to make additional contributions, as well as hold a Jacksonville Tribute Livestream with members from the community on September 6th. On Sunday, August 26th, a gunman killed two and left 11 more wounded at a Madden tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, before committing suicide. Among those killed were Taylor Robertson and Elijah Clayton, two of the top Madden competitors. EA canceled the final three Madden Classic qualifier events in order to ... Read more

Samsung unveils an 8K QLED TV you’ll actually be able to buy

Back at CES, Samsung gave us a glimpse at the Q9S 8K TV, which notably used artificial intelligence to upscale content to 8K. That was cool, but it was just a concept. During its IFA presentation today, the company unveiled its first 8K QLED TV that’ll actually be available for purchase: The Q900R. It loses the easel-like design of the concept for a more traditional stand but it packs in many of the same features, including a real 8K resolution and AI upscaling. Samsung claims the set will also feature a 4,000 nit peak brightness, as well as support for ... Read more

Bungie may have accidentally fixed Destiny 2’s matchmaking, but a lot of players preferred it bugged

Last month, Bungie accidentally disabled skill-based matchmaking for Destiny 2’s quickplay PvP mode, inadvertently creating more chaotic matches that value speed over balance. It wasn’t an intentional change, but Bungie agreed to “take no immediate action” and watch how things played out. And they played out quite well: quickplay was a mess, many agreed, but it was a fun mess. However, following yesterday’s pre-Forsaken update, the same quickplay proponents are suspicious that skill-based matchmaking has returned to ruin their fun. Several prominent Destiny 2 PvP streamers and YouTubers are reporting dramatically longer quickplay queue times, which is a textbook symptom ... Read more

Dell’s bright new monitor should be a sight for sore eyes

Boasting a peak brightness of 600 nits, the company wants to call it the world’s brightest, but there’s some fine print to the claim – it’s the brightest “27-in QHD USB-C monitor.” Sure, 600 nits is nothing to scoff at, but it’s not unheard of on other monitors, and some of the more extravagant ones go to 1,000 nits or more.
