What is public cloud?

Cloud computing remains an important technology for businesses. It’s divided into three categories: public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud, the last being a combination of the first two. In contrast to a private cloud that is built using the company’s infrastructure, a public cloud is created from third-party resources, which get shared between multiple organizations. This makes the public cloud provider a vendor which is providing virtual computer resources to the organization. These days, public clouds are not routinely deployed as the only solution for the organization. Rather, they are frequently utilized as part of a heterogeneous environment, often ... Read more

CS:GO gets a free, offline-only edition

If you haven’t yet played Valve’s multiplayer shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive then you can now jump in for free—but you’ll only be able to fight against bots and spectate games on GOTV. CS:GO Free Edition came to Steam this week, and it’ll be a good starting point for anybody that hasn’t already jumped in, giving you a flavour of the mechanics—and a chance to learn the maps—without the pain of getting annihilated in online matches. I’m sure most players that have ever been curious about it will have picked it up for cheap in a sale, but hey, if you ... Read more

Phantom Doctrine, the Cold War spy strategy game, is getting mod support

Cold War turn-based strategy game Phantom Doctrine (think XCOM with rougher edges) is getting mod support, developer CreativeForge Games has announced.  Here’s hoping that modders can fix some of its major flaws. As Evan said in his review, Phantom Doctrine is occasionally brilliant, but mostly boring because both its enemies and heroes are too simple. Its combat is unbalanced, too: melee takedowns are a one-hit kill, and if you choose the right perks you can basically make your character invisible. Thankfully, these are just the kind of things that mods can address. What if, as Evan suggests, you could spec ... Read more

Steam Survival Hit SCUM Removes Nazi Tattoo After Outcry

In the short time since its release, survival game SCUM has caught players’ eyes for its ludicrous attention to detail, its slapstick antics, and—in the grand tradition of survival games like Ark: Survival Evolved—diarrhoea. It’s already sold over 250,000 copies. Yesterday, though, the game caught players off guard in a far less fun way when they discovered they could put a Nazi tattoo on their avatars. The tattoo, which players could unlock if they purchased the SCUM supporter pack, prominently featured an iron cross with a skull and the numbers 14 and 88. Both are white supremacist dog whistles: 14 ... Read more

MSI targets pros with a thin and light laptop packed with GeForce Max-Q graphics

MSI introduced the P65 notebook, which targets content creators and professionals, during the IFA 2018 convention in Berlin. Buyers will have two options: A White Limited Edition model and a Silver Edition version. Both will be similar yet offer slightly different discrete graphics configurations and ports. According to MSI, both versions will sport a 15.6-inch IPS screen with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution and support for 100 percent of the sRGB space. They will be powered by an eighth-generation Core i7 “Coffee Lake-H” processor, although MSI doesn’t specify which chip the laptops will use: The Core i7-8850H or the Core i7-8750H, ... Read more

Getting started in survival game Scum

Scum, the new Early Access survival game from Gamepires and Croteam arrived onto Steam this week, racking up over 50,000 players (plus some controversy for its now-removed Nazi tattoos). There’s some pretty complicated stuff going on under Scum’s hood, and I suspect we’ll probably have a more complete guide in the future as we learn out how everything works and more features arrive as its development continues. For now, you might just want to jump into the game without understanding every single aspect of the simulation. Here’s a few tips for quickly getting started. Try singleplayer first Staring with singleplayer ... Read more

Dead Cells review – the new king of the castle

Like studying a picture of a car, a lawn mower or a sewing machine, you can tell a lot from a static image of a video game (and even more from footage of it in motion), but you won’t know how it feels. Only in the hands will a game reveal its unspoken character, its pitch and responsiveness, the time a thought takes to travel from the fingers into the buttons of the controller, through the underlying code, to explode on the screen as action described by light. “Game-feel” is a nebulous yet numinous thing; it’s here that a video ...
