Destiny 2: How the Haunted Forest Mode Works

report this adLast year, Destiny 2 skipped the franchise’s annual Halloween event, Festival of the Lost, which is understandable since the game was only a month old at that point. However, Year 2 means big things for Destiny 2, including the return of Festival of the Lost, which now includes a spooky Haunted Forest mode for good measure.

The Haunted Forest mode in Destiny 2 will go live in the game on October 16, when the Festival of the Lost begins. In Haunted Forest, players are tasked with killing “ghouls and demons” and get as far as they can within a 15 minute time limit. The Haunted Forest will be available to play solo or in co-op, plus it will also allow for matchmaking, so no one has to brave its horrors alone.

The Haunted Forest itself takes place in the Infinite Forest, an area that was added as part of the Curse of Osiris expansion for Destiny 2. Because of this, some fans have been concerned that the Haunted Forest would be locked behind DLC, but Bungie has confirmed that isn’t the case. All Destiny 2 players will be able to access the Haunted Forest, as it’s accessible through its own node instead of Mercury.

It makes sense for Bungie to make sure that the Haunted Forest is available for all players. After all, it could cause a controversy if Bungie decided to lock base game players out of seasonal events, especially since few, if any, games do that. Plus, it could discourage some players from returning to Destiny 2 full-time if they dive back in due to interest in the Festival of the Lost event only to discover that they can’t access the Haunted Forest.

Not to mention Bungie has already come under fire for locking Destiny 2 players out of content. As some may recall, the Curse of Osiris expansion locked players out of playing the Leviathan raid on Prestige difficulty if they didn’t have the DLC, despite it being an option prior to its launch.

There’s been a lot of positive buzz surrounding Destiny 2 since the release of the Forsaken expansion, and it looks like that momentum will continue with the Festival of the Lost event. By allowing everyone to access the Haunted Forest – even those without the DLC – it ensures that the event should be entertaining for all Destiny 2 players.

Destiny 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
