How VR is more than a game

I love VR and I love gaming, but I have now got to the point where the mention of the two things in the same sentence – specially when people seem to imply they’re the same thing – makes me roll my eyes and sigh. Part of it is due to the fact I’m yet to get really hooked into a VR game. Most of them just make me feel queasy, so I’m limited to short experiences that showcase the potential of the medium, for sure, but in no way prompt me to sell my console and screen setup just ... SCUM is the new hardcore survival game climbing the charts on Twitch

The survival genre has been exploding lately thanks to the popularity of battle royale-style games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. But a brand new survival game, titled SCUM, is currently the third most popular game on Twitch. Developed by a small team at Gamepires with the help of Croteam, creators of the Serious Sam franchise, it’s a profoundly hardcore experience and a throwback to the earliest days of the survival genre. In the fiction of SCUM, players take on the role of inmates in a supermax prison. Those prisoners are also contestants on a reality-style TV program produced by the ... Read more

NBA 2K19 Makes a Heck of a First Impression

Share. Refined sim hoops at 4K and 60fps. YESSSS!! By Ryan McCaffrey NBA 2K19 is just around the corner (it releases on September 11), but in the meantime 2K was kind enough to bring a recent build of the sim basketball game to IGN. They brought the Xbox One X version, complete with 4K/60fps visuals. It makes one heck of a first impression, certainly in the graphics department, and in the gameplay as well. Check out a few first-quarter gameplay clips below. First is LeBron and the Lakers doing some ice-cold shooting (my fault!) against Giannis and the Bucks. Second ... Read more

Steam remains comfortably dominant, but the competitive threats are gathering

Fallout 76 won’t be available via Steam. Fortnite, which is likely the biggest game in the world right now, has its own launcher. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be exclusive to Battle.net. Electronic Arts not only has its own digital distribution service, but it’s moving toward a subscription model in general. The biggest franchises from the biggest publishers in gaming are becoming less likely to release their games on Steam, where they give up a 30 percent cut of revenue to Valve. So what does this mean for the future of Steam? Steam is in an enviable situation ... Read more

Oculus founder calls Magic Leap headset a ‘tragic heap’

I wonder who is the bitter, angry, banished Zuko in our story? ? — Rony Abovitz (@rabovitz) August 27, 2018 Luckey’s blog post provides a good deal of insider perspective on VR tech. He says, “[The Magic Leap] is less of a functional developer kit and more of a flashy hype vehicle that almost nobody can actually use in a meaningful way, and many of their design decisions seem to be driven by that reality.” He also says that it doesn’t actually deliver on its promises. Magic Leap has been in development for almost four years, but in an AR ... Read more
