An early love of football sims became a real-life career for this football manager

A football coach has landed a coaching job owed, in part, to a childhood passion for management sims. Shaun Guest, originally from Lancashire, England, but now residing in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, manages Strule United after studying sports management with coaching at University.  Admittedly, it’s not quite premiership level yet, as Strule play in Division One of the Fermanagh and Western Football League. But it’s an early love of football management games that gave Guest his passion for behind-the-scenes football tactics. “Since I was very young I’ve been playing computer games like Championship Manager and Football Manager, and my dad used ... There are too many video games. What now?

“I don’t recommend quitting your day job to anyone these days,” says Jordi de Paco with a heavy sigh. De Paco is no newcomer to the erratic world of independent game development, having worked on dozens of prototypes and multiple commercial releases over the years. But while his career has had ups and downs, he sees 2018 as the most challenging year yet for small teams. “Everyone can make games, but be realistic. … It used to be that you could do something that nobody had ever seen before, or you could do something familiar really well. Now, it has ... Read more

Football Fans Throw Controllers Onto Field in Protest Against Esports

They also unfurled a giant flag displaying a “pause” icon, while the travelling Basel fans also had ... Read more

Sports’ story mode sequels have a hard act to follow — their own

This is the sixth year of narrative story modes as an annual feature in a sports video game, the second with them prominent in three big titles, and it feels like we’ve hit a turning point. It wouldn’t surprise me to see it end up as a nice idea that has run its course, as opposed to a new expectation of the genre’s biggest names. I say that after laboring through the third installment of The Journey, the story mode of EA Sports’ FIFA series since 2016. The soccer action is enjoyable enough, but even with three playable characters, none ... Read more

Laser League: The Best Game of 2018 That Nobody’s Playing

You can never predict what’s going to become a hit in videogames. Who could have foreseen an absurd fusion of football and rocket-fuelled cars (which had already failed to make an impact on PS3) would become a global esport, or that Fortnite would surpass the game it had began imitating to become a worldwide cultural phenomenon? But where there is fortune, there is also misfortune. And if there’s one game that hasn’t had much luck at all in 2018, it’s Laser League. With this game London-based developer Roll7 (OlliOlli, Not A Hero) took a bold step into team-based multiplayer and imagining a sport of the ... Read more

Check it out: Take a bow, Beckham (and Michel!). Considering that Michel is losing ... Read more
