Video Game Heroine of the Month: Kassandra, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Girl power has come back to Assassin’s Creed once more with a female protagonist in the “real-world” version of the narrative as well as ancient history, as its heroine Kassandra takes the honor of being October’s Video Game Heroine of the Month

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate before it, features both a male and female protagonist. In the case of Syndicate, you could opt to play as either Evie or Jacob Frye, both with their own unique traits and personalities. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey opts for a more streamlined concept, offering the characters Alexios and Kassandra, essentially the “male” and “female” options of the same person. While players can opt for the male hero Alexios, Kassandra is actually considered the “canon” option, as confirmed in the novelization of the game.

The Spartan mercenary (or the Misthios, if you prefer) fought valiantly during the Peloponnesian War, and claims some important heritage: She’s the granddaughter of King Leonidas of Sparta, for crying out loud. During her adventures as a mercenary, she works to oppose the bizarre Cult of Kosmos, who are dead set on controlling the entirety of Greece. Kassandra represents part of the earliest subsets of the Assassin Brotherhood, which (as you’re no doubt already aware) is an important part of the Assassin’s Creed narrative as a whole.

Kassandra as a character is a tough-talking warrior who can back up every barbed word she slings at her enemies, and certainly someone you don’t want to mess with. Growing up, she trained with her father, all the while narrowly avoiding the fulfillment of a prophecy that would instead affect her brother, Alexios, though she eventually ended up in even hotter water as a younger child after tragedy almost befell her.

Despite all this, she’s a strong and capable character, and a pleasure to explore the whole of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s land of Kephallonia with. She’s also got a sharp tongue on her, which makes her a hilarious role to step into if you’re tired of some of the other protagonists in the series.

All this and more make Kassandra worthy of being the Video Game Heroine of the Month, and well worth exploring with. If you’re interested in checking out Kassandra’s story, pick up Assassin’s Creed Odyssey on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or PC now, as it’s available for all platforms.
