Remedy Entertainment is adapting Alan Wake into a television series

Material from unfinished sequel will serve as inspiration for the show, says game creator Sam Lake

A live-action television series based on Remedy Entertainment’s psychological horror series Alan Wake is in the works.

As reported by Variety, game creator Sam Lake will serve as executive producer, while Peter Calloway — Legion producer and Cloak and Dagger writer — has been brought on as showrunner.

The series is being produced in partnership with Contradiction Films; the Canadian production company has worked on video game adaptations before, such as Dead Rising: Endgame, and Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

Released on Xbox 360 and PC in 2010, Alan Wake was met with a positive critical reception, selling 3.2 million units.

Although Remedy did begin working on a sequel, the game never received a follow-up beyond the 2012 American Nightmare spin-off

Lake revealed that ideas and concepts from the unfinished sequel would be used as inspiration for the television series, and that the first game would serve as a starting point for the show.

“The story of the original game is our starting point, the seed which will grow into the bigger story we’re exploring in the show,” he told Variety. “We’ll be expanding the lore of this crazy and dark universe and diving deeper into certain aspects of it than the game ever did…

“Not only that, through the years we’ve worked on multiple game concepts and stories for Alan Wake’s world that have never seen the light of day. All of this material will function as potential source material for the show.”

While the show is still in pre-production, Tomas Harlan from Contradiction said that a number of studios are already interested.

If it proves successful, Harlan said he hopes it could open possibilities for a second game.

Lake was less forthright however, saying: “At the moment, there is no news of any further Alan Wake games.

“As before, we’re exploring these possibilities and hoping to make it happen when the time is right.”
