Understanding Destiny 2’s Cool But Confusing Weapon Slot Changes Going Live Today

Destiny 2Bungie

Destiny 2 is a getting a big, pre-Forsaken patch today which will add a number of small things to the game (adding the ability to delete shaders five at a time), but one big thing, the new weapon slot system that is the core of loadouts in the Forsaken era going forward.

Players have been complaining about Destiny 2’s dual-primary, overly-crowded power slot system for a long while now, and instead of simply reverting back to the old, Destiny 1 system, Bungie is doing something radically different.

In an effort to mix up loadout diversity as much as possibly, Bungie has devised a system that allows for a lot more flexibility of what goes where. You will be limited not by locked weapons into locked slots, but mostly by ammo type. Want to run triple shotguns? You can, but you may be hurting for ammo. Want to echo Destiny 1 and have a secondary sniper rifle and a power rocket launcher? You can do that too.

The problem is that when you combine the system Destiny players have been using for a year…with ideas about the Destiny 1 system…with the reality of the new system which relies on ammo type as a significant modifier, it gets pretty confusing. At least on paper. Once you’re using the system for yourself live in game you may adjust to it quickly, but it’s a little hard to wrap your brain around at the moment.

The biggest change you have to understand is that white bricks are no longer solely for primary ammo (kinetic) and green bricks are for secondary (energy), rather they are tied to the weapon type itself. Here’s the best way I can think of to describe the current system that’s going live today (which should be around 5 PM ET, after some lengthy maintenance):

KINETIC SLOT (D1 Primary)

  • WHITE AMMO: Auto Rifles, Pulse Rifles, Scout Rifles, Hand Cannons, Sidearms, SMGS, Bows
  • GREEN AMMO: Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, Single-use Grenade Launchers

ENERGY SLOT (D1 Secondary)

  • WHITE AMMO: Auto Rifles, Pulse Rifles, Scout Rifles, Hand Cannons, Sidearms, SMGS, Bows
  • GREEN AMMO: Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, Fusion Rifles, Single-use Grenade Launchers, Trace Rifles

POWER SLOT (D1 Heavy)

  • PURPLE AMMO: Linear Fusion Rifles, Drum Grenade Launchers, Rocket Launchers, Swords

The Whisper of the WormBungie

Some additional notes/clarifications: Exotics DARCI, Whisper of the Worm, Tractor Cannon and Legend of Acrius are being kept in the power slot using purple ammo as exceptions to the rule. There may be more exceptions with Forsaken gear. I believe Fighting Lion may use white ammo also as an exception.

While all snipers and shotguns are currently energy, these weapons are now being changed to kinetic: Alone as a God (sniper), Baligant (shotgun), The Frigid Jackal (sniper), Hawthorne’s Field-Forged Shotgun, Perfect Paradox (shotgun), Shepherd’s Watch (sniper), Silicon Neuroma (sniper).

That does not meant they use white ammo bricks, it just means they can go in the kinetic slot. They still use green ammo bricks.

Again, the biggest change is understanding that ammo is now tied to weapon type, not slot, but even there we have a few exotic exceptions. This probably sounds more confusing than it is, but hopefully you’ll get the hang of it soon. That’s one benefit of this launching a week early before the expansion hits, I suppose.

If you have any more questions, hit me up on Twitter. I hope I have gotten this right, but even I’m not 100% on everything. I think I’ve gotten my head around it, but I’ll need to play around with it in game to full understand it, which I will be doing tonight.
